House history research: discover your home’s past

A house name, an old address or a family story can be the starting point. We assess whether accessible historical records can help answer a specific question about a home, farm or place, particularly in North Wales.

Ask about a house or place ↗

Who lived here, and what can the records tell us?

Depending on the location and period, useful sources may include census entries, historical maps, directories, newspapers and published local histories. A surviving record may identify a household, occupation or former name. We explain what each source establishes and where a connection remains uncertain.

What to include in your enquiry

  • The house name or historic address and country
  • An approximate period or a particular question
  • Any former names or published references you already know

Please avoid sending private details about current occupants in your first message.

A clear report with sources

The focused starter study includes up to four hours of desk research and a concise English PDF, usually 2–4 pages, with references and notes on gaps.

Read our seven-page Yr Ysgwrn demonstration report. The sample uses published institutional accounts; it is not a customer investigation.

£149 one-off starter study · One agreed research question. We check feasibility and confirm scope, timing, cancellation information and terms before payment. Paid records, certificates, visits and extra research are excluded unless separately agreed.

Can you establish exactly when a house was built?

Not always. Records may offer a date range or identify earlier occupants without proving the original construction date. We assess the available evidence before agreeing to the work, and no particular discovery is guaranteed.

Enquiries from overseas are welcome. All arrangements can be handled by email, with the report delivered as a PDF; no Zoom call is needed.
